What a thrill it has to be for a rookie to play his first major league game on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. For one Cubs rookie this dream turned into a tragedy real quick.
Pinch hitting in the 9th inning, rookie Adam Greenberg was experiencing the moment he dreamed of forever. However, the very first pitch struck Greenberg on the back of the head, and he has not seen a major league pitch since.
Struggling with post concussion symptoms, Greenberg became just the second player in MLB history to be hit by the first pitch in his only plate appearance. Greenberg has been determined to get back in the big leagues ever since.
On Oct. 2, the inspiring story of perseverance and dedication for Greenberg will come true. The Marlins signed him to a one day contract worth $3,000. Greenberg will donate the money back to the Marlins organization, which ironically was the team he was facing when he got hit in the head.
Many people think that this is ruining the integrity of the game, and that it is not fair that he can get signed for one day just for one at bat. Greenberg says that this is not a stunt, since he earned his way into the big leagues in 2005. I think that this is a class act by the Marlins, and I am truely happy for Greenberg. As we know, concussions affect many athletes, and I am glad to see someone fight it and bouce back.
